Vince Staples may be best known for his sardonic social media personality and scathing, nihilistic gangsta raps, but he’s also quite the pitchman – remember his hilarious Sprite commercials? Long Beach native uses all three skills Pokémon 25: the album, a compilation of tracks celebrating the 25th anniversary of the multi-generational multimedia franchise. Vince contributes “Got ‘Em” to the album, which also features names like J Balvin, Lil Yachty, Post Malone and Tierra Whack and is released on October 15th.
Above, in a rare glimpse of Vince’s seriousness, he breaks down the “evolution” – hehe – of “Got ‘Em” with a “help” from Snorlax. Of course, if you know anything about Pokemon – which, as Vince points out in the video, you probably know – helping Snorlax basically boils down to taking a nap in the corner while Vince recounts his experiences in playing video game and watching the cartoon grow up. As he says, âIt’s important to tap into your inner child or just not to be jaded. There is always room for excitement, fun, or optimism if you can keep the things that were important to you as a child, it will put you in a good position.
If this sounds like a big change from the rapper’s usual stance on such things, maybe it’s time to go back and revisit his old job – despite the common thread of fatalistic acceptance of his dark surroundings. , there have always been glimpses of optimism as seen by his mischievous sense of humor. This humor also appears in his Pokemon explainer; the final part of the clip consists of Vince comparing his “nap ability” to that of Snorlax and determining that while he’s an expert at catching 40 winks whenever possible, the round road lapper has much more experience in sawing logs anytime.
