Tottenham remain interested in signing Joao Palhinha from Sporting CP but are only willing to spend half of his € 40million prize money.
According to a report by Portuguese publication Record, relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur continues to be linked with a decision by 26-year-old Sporting CP midfielder Joao Palhinha. However, the Lilywhites are only willing to pay € 20million for the Portugal international.
Palhinha, a product of Sporting’s youth academy, has emerged as a key player in the squad over the past year after a string of loans to Moreirense, Belenenses, SC Braga. The 26-year-old has played 38 games in all competitions as the Lions achieved a league and cup double under Ruben Amorim.
Palhinha’s form also earned him a place in Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad, although he only played sparingly during the competition. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old’s performances over the past year have attracted great interest from England with Tottenham heavily linked with a move.
Tottenham, after a hesitant start to the summer, seem to have found the right note, following the appointments of Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici as manager and director respectively. Three impressive signings in the form of Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero were backed up by two Premier League wins in two games.

Furthermore, they have also managed to keep superstar striker Harry Kane amid Manchester City’s interest, at least so far. However, the transfer business is far from over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as another striker and midfielder are being watched by the Lilywhites.
On paper, it looks like Tottenham have enough options in the middle of the park with Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Giovani Lo Celso. However, of those, Sissoko is over thirty and is linked with an exit while Winks could also leave before the transfer window closes.
As for Ndombele, he finds himself in disgrace under Nuno, much like it was under José Mourinho, and could be on the way out, with Real Madrid and Barcelona among his contenders. In such a scenario, Tottenham will need to bring in another midfielder, making Palhinha, who can play No.6, a viable transfer target.
While Sporting are said to be reluctant to sell, an offer around € 40m could see them decide to cash in. However, according to the report, Tottenham are ready to go up to just € 20million, which leads to question marks over the ongoing deal. Another report from A Bola (h / t Sport Witness) claims that the Portuguese champions are said to be ready to reduce their demands to € 30million.
However, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham are ready to hit that number or decide to explore other alternatives, with Juventus’ Weston McKennie also becoming a transfer target.
