Dauri Moreta reportedly made Cincinnati Reds opening day roster

The Cincinnati faithful had to say goodbye to some fan favorites this spring. Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suárez and Sonny Gray will all wear different uniforms in 2022 than they did last season. But the absence of some of the Cincinnati Reds’ well-known stars has opened the door to new faces.

One of them is Hunter Greene. The former No. 2 overall pick has been selected to make the Reds Opening Day roster. Greene is scheduled to make his league debut on April 10 against defending champion Atlanta Braves.

Moreover, it looks like fellow rookie Dauri Moreta will also make the Reds Opening Day roster. With Moreta making his major league debut in 2021, it’s no small feat to be named to a team’s opening day roster.

According to MLB insider Hector Gómez, right-hander Dauri Moreta will be part of the Cincinnati Reds’ opening day roster. The expansion from 26 to 28 players for the first month of the 2022 season no doubt helped Moreta work his way up the roster, but the 25-year-old was going to make it difficult for David Bell to leave him even if the extra spots have not been added.

Moreta had an impressive performance last week against the heart of the Los Angelels Dodgers batting order. In 2021, Moreta appeared in four games for the Reds late in the season and posted a 2.45 ERA in 3.2 innings of work.

Moreta did most of his damage split between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. In 53 innings of work, Moreta posted a 1.06 ERA and 29.1 percent strikeout rate. Perhaps more impressive was Moreta’s 4.5% walk rate.

If Dauri Moreta’s abilities can translate to the big leagues, then the Cincinnati Reds could have a real find on their hands. Moreta still has minor league options, so if he runs into any trouble, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the right-hander sent back to Triple-A for some adjustments. Congratulations are in order for Dauri Moreta.
