Netflix Confirms Switch To Video Games As Growth Slows

Confirmation of the long-awaited expansion came alongside the release of Netflix’s latest earnings report.

Netflix has reported its worst subscriber growth slowdown in eight years as people emerge from pandemic cocoons. He therefore adds a new attraction to his marquee: video games.

(Subscribe to our Today’s Cache newsletter for a quick rundown of the 5 best tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.)

On Tuesday, the video streaming giant announced that it will offer video games in its existing subscription plans at no additional cost, but did not say when the service will launch or what type of games it will develop.

Confirmation of the long-awaited expansion came alongside the release of Netflix’s latest earnings report. This financial breakdown showed that the video service added 1.5 million subscribers during the April-June period. This is slightly better than the modest increase expected by management after the service got off to a slow start during the winter months, but still well below its growth rate in recent years.

Netflix’s net gain of 5.5 million subscribers in the first six months of this year represents its weakest first-half performance since 2013 – a period when the company was still rolling out more original programming as it stood out. licenses for existing television series and films.

Now Netflix is taking it to the next level by delivering video games that intend to perform in what it has described as a multi-year expansion. The Los Gatos, Calif., Company telegraphed the move last week when it revealed the hiring of veteran video game executive Mike Verdu to explore potential opportunities in another area of entertainment.

“The reason we’re doing them is to help the subscription service grow and be more important in people’s lives,” Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings told investors at a discussion Tuesday.

Greg Peters, chief product officer for Netflix, said the company will initially focus on mobile games before expanding to consoles and TVs as well. The games will initially tie into Netflix’s most popular lineup, Peters said, but standalone titles can be added to the mix as well. He even speculated that Netflix could possibly make a TV series or movie based on one of his video games.

“There’s a big, big prize here, and our job is to be really focused,” Peters said.

Despite slowing growth this year, Netflix remains by far the largest streaming service in the world in an increasingly competitive field that includes Walt Disney Co., HBO, Amazon and Apple. Netflix ended June with 209 million subscribers worldwide.

The weight of Netflix also generated stable profits. The company earned $ 1.35 billion, or $ 2.97 per share, almost double from the same period last year. Revenue increased 19% from a year ago to $ 7.3 billion.

But the lackluster first half numbers are a dramatic reversal from last year, when government-imposed lockdowns across the world caused people to watch frenzies while locked at home. Already the world’s largest video streaming service when the pandemic began in March 2020, Netflix garnered 26 million subscribers in the first half of last year. .

While no one expected Netflix to keep up this breakneck pace, the decline in subscriber growth this year has been more severe than expected. Netflix shares are down about 10% from their high of $ 593.29 six months ago. Shares edged higher in extended trading after Tuesday’s news broke.

Netflix management blamed part of this year’s slowdown on pandemic-induced production delays that have left its video service with less proven success. Los Gatos, Calif., Expects this problem to fade in the second half of this year with the release of popular series such as “Sex Education” and “The Witcher,” as well as films featuring. featured stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep.

Despite this, Netflix let investors down with a forecast calling only 3.5 million additional subscribers in the July-September period. It was well below analyst estimates for a gain of 5.6 million subscribers in the third quarter, according to FactSet Research. The “somewhat disappointing” guidelines have raised more concerns about increased competition in video streaming, as well as the fallout from ending pandemic lockdowns, CFRA analyst Tuna Amobi said.

Conservative outlook suggests that Netflix doesn’t expect an immediate boost from its foray into a highly competitive area of video games already contested by much more seasoned companies such as Epic Games, Microsoft and Electronic Arts.

But if the switch to video games pays off, it could potentially give Netflix more leverage to raise its prices. The company has already gradually increased subscription costs in recent years, helping to increase its average monthly revenue per subscriber to $ 14.54 in its largest market consisting of the United States and Canada. That’s a 16% increase from $ 12.52 per month two years ago.

5 combo weapons that can do it all

Have you ever looked at your favorite bird pistol and thought, I wish this shotgun was a rifle too? Or maybe after shooting your AR you felt something was missing, like a front mounted sawed-off shotgun.

Combination rifles have always pushed the boundaries of what is practical to carry around the field. They come in many configurations and sport multiple guns in a number of chamberings. They were built in small shops by guild-level craftsmen and mass-produced in factories. Some gunsmiths create them for specific situations while it seems like others make them for just about any situation.

Either way, all combo rifles do the same thing – they let hunters and shooters have their cake and eat it too. Having the right combo gun will allow you to take on different types of game in one outing, like birds and deer, or hopefully give you an edge on the battlefield. We don’t have space to list all the possible barrel combinations and configurations, but here are some of the more notable. Some may seem impractical, but they are all a testament to the extent to which gunmakers will go to turn two guns into one.

1. LeMat Revolver

A LeMat from the Civil War era. Rock Island Auction Company

If you had fought in the Civil War from start to finish, you would have witnessed one of the fastest advancements in military small arms ever. You would have gone into battle on day one with a musket and been shot at by levers, revolvers, and one of the first machine guns. Just about anything weapon designers could imagine was tested in real time, on the battlefield. But few Civil War gun inventions are as cool as the LeMat revolver.

The LeMat was invented by Jean Alexander LeMat of New Orleans and used primarily by the Confederacy. This is a nine shot .42 caliber muzzle loading revolver with an 18 caliber shotgun barrel mounted under the barrel in front of the barrel centerline. The pistol was designed for cavalry troops, and the shotgun part was intended for use as a miniature submachine gun on fast moving targets.

A LaMat worn by Confederate General PGT Beauregard sold for $ 224,000 at auction in 2016. Before the war, he wanted the design made for the US military. After attacking Fort Sumter, he was probably glad it didn’t. Most recently, Ed Harris used a Hollywood version of the LeMat to terrorize humanoid robots from the HBO Westworld series. About 3000 LeMats were made in the 1800s, and you can pick up a file.Pietta 44/20 caliber reproduction for just over $ 1000.

2. Wild model 24

Combined hunting rifle model 24.
The wild model 24. Rock Island Auction Company

Unlike the complicated hand-built European combination weapons, the Model 24 is a hunting tool designed for the masses. But the Model 24 is by no means a poor quality pistol. With a rifle barrel for long shots and a shotgun for anything that runs, jumps or flies, the Models 24 were designed for just about any gun-related task in the woods.

Before Savage began manufacturing the pistol in 1950, Stevens sold it under the model name .22-410. During World War II, the US Army Air Corps ordered more than 22,000 .22-410 models at $ 10.62 each to serve as a survival pistol for the crew. Military weapons were stored in an early version of plastic called Tennit, which would tend to break. Savage discontinued the Model 24 in 2010 and small game hunters who had experience with it were sad to see it go.

The Model 24 is a station wagon with an exposed hammer and a single trigger. A selector on the receiver can be used to move a transfer bar and switch between barrels on the fly. Its most popular configuration is .22LR on .410. But over the years it has also been chambered in a variety of cartridges including .22 WMR, .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, .223 Rem, .30-30 Win, .357 Magnum, and .357 Max for the rifle. ; and .410, 20 gauge and 12 gauge for the shotgun. Used 24 models are quite affordable, but their owners don’t usually part with them lightly. If you find one in an armory, buy it.

3. M30 Luftwaffe Survival Pistol

Drilling of the Luftwaffe on a carrying case.
The M30 Luftwaffe survival gun. Rock Island Auction Company

The M30 is an extravagant gun on its own, but when placed alongside other crew survival guns it really shines. This is best illustrated by a comparison:

The American M6 Survival Pistol did not take off during WWII, but it is an example of a typical pilot’s survival pistol. Constructed of stamped sheet metal, it could fire .22 Hornets and .410s and holds a handful of shells in the butt to bag small game. The M30, meanwhile, was intended for a full-fledged safari. This is a drill, with the prefix dri meaning three (drei) in German, which means that the weapon has three barrels: two 12 caliber barrels on a 9.3x74r rifled barrel, which is comparable to the .375 Nitro Express. The guns were built by Sauer & Sohn in the gunmaking town of Suhl where they were engraved, case hardened, stored in walnut, covered with swastikas, and packaged in a handy aluminum travel case with plenty of ammunition.

The M30 drill saw action primarily in Africa, where one could claim a shotgun of its caliber. But most of the game that requires a 9.3x74r lives in Central and Southern Africa, and the Nazi aviators were fighting in the north. The rest is a bit of a mystery. Some believe the weapon was the product of cronyism on the part of General Goering, who was the leader of the Luftwaffe and the hunting master of Nazi Germany. Whatever the reason for such a luxurious survival gun, it didn’t last long. Around 4,000 M30s were ordered from Sauer & Sohn, but only around 2,500 were delivered before someone figured out the numbers and shut down the project.

The most interesting thing about the Luftwaffe drill is that when you turn the rear tang selector switch to fire the rifle barrel, a small rear sight automatically rises from the rib, turning your front heel into a sight. . The left barrel was also set to fire a bullet at the same point of impact as the rifle barrel, and the Airmen were given 20 Brennake bullets in their kit. Had they gone further south, the downed Luftwaffe pilots might have enjoyed a hunter’s paradise, but in the sandy deserts of the north they would have been hungry.

3. Peter Hofer Jagdwaffen Autumn

The Peter Hofer Jagdwaffen Autumn drill gun.
Peter Hofer Jagdwaffen’s Fall Drill Pistol. Peter Hofer Jagdwaffen

A drill is a three-barrel combined rifle, a four-barrel vierling, and a five-barrel funfling. Peter Hofer from Ferlach, Austria makes them all, plus just about any other gun, trigger, and steel setup you can imagine. If you’re willing to fork out the kind of cash to afford one of Hofer’s weapons, this is the kind of variety you should expect.

Hofer combines engineering, artistry and a mind-blowing level of craftsmanship to build combination weapons. Rather than just stacking gun barrels on top of each other, her shop finds interesting ways to integrate them with each other. A good example of this is one of Hofer’s boreholes called the Autumn. It’s a side-by-side shotgun with a .17 Hornet barrel hidden in the rib. Most drill holes get big or go home, inevitably adding weight to the gun. But using such a small rifle barrel, the fall is said to have similar weight and balance to other 12 gauge side-by-side.

There is something devious and almost nasty about the way the Fall Rifled Cannon hides in plain sight. The pistol has two triggers, but the barrels are not fired via a selector like the Luftwaffe drill or the Model 24. Instead, the front trigger fires both shotgun barrels in a right / left sequence while the The rear is a trigger defined for the .17 Frelon.

The big game is a stretch for the fall rifle part, but I imagine it would be at home on a quail hunt that involves a mid-range hare or two. The oil baron or the oligarch who ends up buying it probably wouldn’t be caught dead hunting hares in the desert, but if I had the money to afford one of Hofer’s wells, I like to think that’s exactly what I would do with it.

5. Crye Precision / Vantage Arms SIX12

Hunting rifle and combined rifle AR-15.
The Crye Precision Six12 shotgun mounted on an AR-15.

On its own, the SIX12 is a 12 gauge rotating bullpup shotgun, which is pretty cool on its own. Hit the gun on the front of an AR, and he becomes another animal. The SIX12 debuted in 2014, and it was created by weapons designer Eric Burt. It uses a removable, rotating cylinder that works by pulling the trigger, making the gun completely mechanical. It was designed to be strapped under the front of a gun to shoot locks on doors that don’t want to be opened.

Before options like the SIX12 arrived, those who wanted to open a door with a shotgun had to bring a separate shotgun, open the door, then step aside as their buddies walked through the door firing their rifles. . With a SIX12 / AR-15 combination pistol, a shooter can punch a hole in the door, kick it open, and simply raise their rifle.

For anyone breaking doors for a living (or playing Call of Duty), it may remind you of the Knights Armament Masterkey, which was essentially a short Remington 870 attached to the bottom of an M16. But the SIX12 is more ergonomic and, as the name suggests, keeps six 3-inch 12-gauge cartridges close at hand – three more than a sawn 870.

The SIX12 can also be mounted on a picatinny-rail chassis and used as a stand-alone shotgun without AR. And its barrel can be replaced with a longer one, which makes it very versatile. Vantage Arms, the company that makes the SIX12, also worked with SilencerCo to make a suppressed version, and they even make a wood-fired hunting version of the weapon. A quick look at The Vantage website shows that the SIX12 has not yet been released to the public, but you can sign up to be notified when it is.

Little love stories: “Who was I to deprive him of joy? “

0

“Complicated things do break,” I warned my husband five years ago as he looked at the contactless toilet at the plumbing store. “There’s an electromagnetic field,” he said, smiling like a 10-year-old about to eat a frozen birthday cake. “Just wave your hand to rinse.” Who was I to deprive him of joy by insisting on an old-fashioned waste disposal system? Of course, the lemon is barely reddening and our replacement is stuck with pandemic supply chain issues. For now, I’m waving my hand like a frenzied wizard looking for the only receptive spot. I remember my “I told you so”. Marriage is also a complicated thing. – Sharon Forman

For three decades, Jo Ann and I spent Friday afternoons strolling around Lake Winona in Minnesota. We’ve been through pregnancies and miscarriages, homeopathy studies and college tenure, Weight Watchers and changing wardrobes, taking care of girls (and sometimes their fathers). And, for 24 of those years, we walked with Jo Ann’s breast cancer. Despite her illness, we planned trips, birthdays, Passover seders, bat mitzvahs, and a girl’s wedding. In June 2020, we took our last walk around the lake. Last February, Jo Ann took her last breath. My life will never be the same. – Colette Hyman

My man laughed and said, “I was wondering when you would say it.” The “it” has always been, “God, we are so lucky. I rarely know when it’s going to fall: at the end of winter on Forest Beach in Chatham. Walking past my grandmother’s apartment on Mulberry Street in Chinatown. Minutes after seeing Dylan at the Beacon Theater. A Parisian café in a district that I no longer remember. And this morning over coffee as we celebrate the 16th anniversary of our trip to Jiangxi Province, where our daughter first snuggled up in my arms. Now, she’s a strong young woman. God, we are so lucky. – young carole

Hugs, kisses, praise don’t come easily. Our family practices stoic and unspoken love. So how do three daughters tell a dying mother how much we adore her? She was 92 years old. A Google search revealed that Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Princess Grace and Anne Frank were born in the same year as their mother. On a card with their photos, we wrote: “1929 was a good year to produce elegant, inspiring, strong and classy women… We are proud that one of them is ours! Our mother passed away peacefully, a few days after her birthday. Without embarrassing him, we expressed our love to him. – Indu Balachandran

We recognize that there is a unique human factor in every transaction; Lev aims to empower the people behind the transaction and make them smarter and more efficient. “

The funds raised will be mainly used to expand the team of Lev, in their headquarters in New York, the R&D center in Miami and Los Angeles outpost, as well as by distant positions. Ongoing investments will be made in product development and to expand Lev’s services. Lev closed around $ 100 million loans in 2020, their first year of existence, and should close $ 1 billion in 2021.

“Since we started working with Lev, we have been repeatedly impressed with their in-depth knowledge of CREF and their ability to execute all types of complex transactions,” said Steven kachanian, Managing Director at Klosed Properties. “The expertise brought by Lev’s team, combined with tools that help my team and I stay on top of the progress of our transaction, clearly shows that they have envisioned and redefined the entire process of financing, and more. “

Lev is the complete transaction platform for the lifecycle of a commercial real estate investment, from analysis, financing and closing to monitoring, maintenance and, when the time comes, provision. Lev products are designed by an in-house team combining their knowledge of capital markets with cutting-edge technology, processing a wealth of loan data through custom machine learning software to handle even the most complex transactions.

“We firmly believe that Lev is leading the way in the future of the industry by providing technology that not only makes transactions more efficient, but ensures that their clients get the best financing, with the best experience,” said Hunter Somerville, general partner at Greenspring Associates. “And Lev does all of this by working with some of the largest and most established organizations in the industry. Henderson County News: Sky Surfer inventor grew up here as a graduate of HHS

The inventor of Sky Surfer grew up here, graduated from HHS

Hunter Kowald flies over Times Square in New York.

Good Morning America viewers were probably amazed to see a 2.5-minute feature film about the young inventor of something called Sky Surfer, who was shown wearing the Engineer. And locally, some people may have jumped out of their chairs and said, “This kid is from Hendersonville! “

The inventor is Hunter Kowald, 28, who grew up in Hendersonville and graduated from Hendersonville High School in 2011.
The Good Morning America segment showed Kowald flying 30 feet above the ground in Times Square on his Sky Surfer, his feet fixed on platforms above eight small helicopter-shaped toros, a remote control mechanism in his right hand.

The ABC reporter opened the segment by jokingly asking Kowald if he was Spider-Man’s “Green Goblin”.
“I think it’s everyone’s dream to fly since they were little,” Kowald replies. He built the machine by hand for thousands of hours, using his math and engineering skills and training from UNC Charlotte.
“This thing uses 1600 amps of current,” Kowald says. “It’s a lot of power. This is about 8-10 houses all operating at the same time.
HunterKowaldHunter Kowald is interviewed on Good Morning America. [SCREENSHOT FROM GMA]Video shows Kowald sailing above the city, passing neon signs and landing on the roof of a McDonald’s.
“People see it and they think, ‘Oh maybe that looks a little dangerous’ but I’m actually super stable, like I’m standing on the ground, especially once you’ve got the right training. “
“Basically I snowboard, dance with my right arm, and parachute with my left arm and kind of bend over – so a bit of all of those things,” he replies when asked if the sky surf is like a jet ski or a Segway. “Once you get the hang of it, it’s so intuitive and it’s calm and relaxing.”
Kowald is the only person in the world with a Sky Surfer, says the GMA reporter, and he imagines practical applications that could make his invention take off.
“It could be used in emergency situations (or) for rescue,” he says. “I think most people want them for recreation. It’s definitely a fun thing to play with.
Son of Stephanie and Brian Kowald, Hunter grew up on Greenwood Drive near NC 191 and is a product of the Henderson County school system. He and his older brother, Alex, developed a passion for creative engineering as members of the Henderson County robotics team, reaching the regional finals in 2008 when Hunter was in grade one and Alex was in grade two. at Hendersonville High School. Called “Amperage,” the team worked nights and weekends to design and build a robot capable of throwing a giant red ball above or below a 6ft 6in viaduct.
Although Kowald won’t say the sequel, he teased in the GMA feature that his company had “surprise content coming up.”
